Today I’ve been putting the finishing touches on a herd of cardboard elephants for an upcoming event at Storyhouse Library in Chester. Elmer Day celebrates the much-loved children’s book. However, there is an apparent dearth of female elephant characters in the stories, so this, coupled with the fact that elephants live in a matriarchal structure, led me to design some new characters to accompany Elmer and his friends.

They’ll be hiding around Storyhouse on 26th May and throughout half term when you can come to look for them. Families can also come and take part in a songmaking workshop to learn a folk song about elephants. It’s called Chang Chang Chang which I’ve adapted from an original Thai folk song.
